About Becky

Becky grew up in Cheraw, South Carolina. She attended the University of South Carolina where she received an AB degree with a double major in English and retailing.

Becky and her husband Duncan moved to Durham in 1950 when Duncan received a teaching job at Duke University. Becky and Duncan have two children, Stephani and Steve. She has experience in various jobs including day care teaching, substitute teaching in the public schools, the US Census Bureau, and contract work for Duke University in the field of geriatrics.  One of her studies for Duke involved how older persons in rural northern Durham County were able to live alone.

Becky became involved in local government in 1973 when she became the first woman appointed to the Durham Planning and Zoning Commission representing the extra-territorial district. She first ran for the County Commission in 1980 and won that position in 1982. Some of her accomplishments on the Commission are listed here.
